Presenter Biographies

Marja Verhoef PhD (Keynote Speaker)

Marja Verhoef is a Professor at the University of Calgary. Her background is in epidemiology and sociology. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Complementary Medicine. Her interests include methodological issues, treatment decision making in cancer, and enhancing CAM teaching in undergraduate medical education.

Laura Weeks

Laura Weeks is a PhD student in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on patient decision-making regarding complementary and alternative medicine. Specifically, she is interested in how evidence is created and the role of various forms of evidence in the decision-making process.

Steven Aung MD PhD

Dr. Steven Aung is a unique healthcare practitioner, integrating elements of both western and eastern medicines in his family and geriatric practice. Inspired by his grandfather, Dr. Aung developed expertise in acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and Qi Gong. He is a professor in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Faculty of Extension. Fifteen years ago he developed Canada’s first certificate program in medical acupuncture at the U of A, a program for which he remains chief instructor. He is a medical acupuncture consultant for many local hospitals, as well as the Edmonton Oilers hockey and Eskimos football teams. He is extremely active nationally and internationally with various foundations, societies, committees, and organizations, including acting as an advisor to the World Health Organization and as Vice-Chairman to the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies in Beijing, China. He is also an accomplished author; his latest book, Clinical Introduction to Medical Acupuncture, was published last year. Dr. Aung is a much celebrated individual; he has received such honours as the Order of Canada (2006), the Alberta Order of Excellence (2002), the AMA’s Physician of the Century award (2005), and the Ancient Mystical Order of the Rosicrucian International Humanitarian Award (2005). He has also integrated Buddhism and art in his medical practice.

Linda Carlson PhD

Dr. Carlson is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor in Psychosocial Oncology in the Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and the holder of the Enbridge Endowed Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology. She also holds an Adjunct Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Carlson trained as a Clinical Health Psychologist at McGill University in Montreal, researching the area of psychoneuroendocrinology. She then worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, sponsored by a Terry Fox Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the National Cancer Institute of Canada/Canadian Cancer Society, before being appointed Assistant Professor. She received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator award from 2002-2007, before being appointed the Endowed Chairholder.
Dr. Carlson’s current research interests are focused in the areas of computerized distress screening, psychoneuroimmunology, integrative oncology and complementary and alternative medicine, providing and evaluating interventions for cancer patients such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), yoga, Reiki, acupuncture, exercise, and smoking cessation. She has published almost 80 book chapters and research papers in peer-reviewed journals, holds several millions of dollars in grant funding and regularly presents her work at international conferences.

Margaret Sampson MLIS

Margaret Sampson is currently the Librarian at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Within the Cochrane Collaboration, Margaret participates in the Information Retrieval Methods Group and the CAM field, including maintaining the CAM trial registry. She has published on best practices in evidence finding, and on the quality of CAM systematic reviews and trials. Margaret is doing a PhD with the Department of Information Studies, University of Wales.
